The lifetime problem of evaporating black holes: mutiny or resignation

چکیده
It is logically possible that regularly evaporating black holes exist in nature. In fact, the prevalent theoretical view is that these are indeed the real objects behind the curtain in astrophysical scenarios. There are several proposals for regularizing the classical singularity of black holes so that their formation and evaporation do not lead to information-loss problems. One characteristic is shared by most of these proposals: these regularly evaporating black holes present long-lived trapping horizons, with absolutely enormous evaporation lifetimes in whatever measure. Guided by the discomfort with these enormous and thus inaccessible lifetimes, we elaborate here on an alternative regularization of the classical singularity, previously proposed by the authors in an emergent gravity framework, which leads to a completely different scenario. In our scheme the collapse of a stellar object would result in a genuine time-symmetric bounce, which in geometrical terms amounts to the connection of a black-hole geometry with a white-hole geometry in a regular manner. The two most differential characteristics of this proposal are: i) the complete bouncing geometry is a solution of standard classical general relativity everywhere except in a transient region that necessarily extends beyond the gravitational radius associated with the total mass of the collapsing object; and ii) the duration of the bounce as seen by external observers is very brief (fractions of milliseconds for neutron-star-like collapses). This scenario motivates the search for new forms of stellar equilibrium different from black holes. In a brief epilogue we compare our proposal with a similar geometrical setting recently proposed by Haggard and Rovelli. PACS numbers: 04.20.Gz, 04.62.+v, 04.70.-s, 04.70.Dy, 04.80.Cc

Local behaviour of evaporating stars and black holes around the total evaporation event
Many models in which the object under study loses all its mass have appeared in the literature. This can be found from evaporating stars to incipient black holes, all the way to evaporating black holes. In this paper we try a semiclassical study of these evaporating models centred on the evaporating event itself. We analyse their common properties, behaviours and possibilities. Specifically, we...
متن کاملPrimordial black holes in braneworld cosmologies: Formation, cosmological evolution, and evaporation
We consider the population evolution and evaporation of primordial black holes in the simplest braneworld cosmology: Randall-Sundrum type II. We demonstrate that black holes forming during the high-energy phase of this theory ~where the expansion rate is proportional to the density! have a modified evaporation law, resulting in a longer lifetime and lower temperature at evaporation, while those...
متن کاملQuantum ( in ) stability of 2 D charged dilaton black holes due to back - reaction of dilaton coupled scalars
The quantum properties of charged black holes (BHs) found by McGuigan, Nappi and Yost are studied in 2D dilaton-Maxwell gravity (spontaneously compactificated from heterotic string) with N dilaton coupled scalars. Working in large N approach we discuss the presence of stable (evaporating) and unstable (anti-evaporating) modes in the spectrum of quantumcorrected BH. It is proved that charged 2D ...
متن کاملProbing loop quantum gravity with evaporating black holes.
This Letter aims at showing that the observation of evaporating black holes should allow the usual Hawking behavior to be distinguished from loop quantum gravity (LQG) expectations. We present a full Monte Carlo simulation of the evaporation in LQG and statistical tests that discriminate between competing models. We conclude that contrarily to what was commonly thought, the discreteness of the ...
متن کاملPrimordial Black Holes and Primordial Nucleosynthesis I: Effects of Hadron Injection from Low Mass Holes
We investigate the influence of hadron injection from evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early stage of the primordial nucleosynthesis era (t ≃ 10−3 − 104 sec). The emitted quark-antiquark pairs or gluons immediately fragment into a lot of hadrons and scatter off the thermal plasma which is constituted by photons, electrons and nucleons. For the relatively low mass holes we point ...
